SPEAK KINDLY

Here we see a beautiful picture of restoration between Joseph and his brothers. Not only has Joseph forgiven them for their sin against him, but he has also extended his goodwill and authority to bless them and their families. But it goes beyond that.

In Genesis 38:4, at the beginning of this story, it says, “When his brothers saw that their father loved him more than any of them, they hated him and could not speak a kind word to him.” Now, in this restorative moment, we see Joseph reassuring his brothers of his love and forgiveness and SPEAKING KINDLY to them.

Do you want to know a good litmus test for whether you have forgiven someone? Saying “I forgive you” is the starting point, but what follows is more telling. How you treat and speak to them moving forward is much more indicative of what has transpired in your heart.

Do you speak kindly to those you have forgiven, or do you hold a grudge and measure out your kindness?

Being kind fosters affection for those we are kind to. Mistreating others will lead to deeper resentment and hatred.

Reflection: Think about someone you have trouble forgiving. Begin by speaking kindly to them and notice how your heart follows.
